Why tire maintenance matters
Your tires are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, so keeping them in good shape is critical for safety, handling, and fuel economy.
Why it's important
- Safety: Healthy tires give you traction and stability — everything the vehicle does starts here.
- Handling: Properly inflated tires with good tread depth respond better, especially in bad weather.
- Fuel efficiency: Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance and hurt your MPG.
Signs your tires need attention
- Tread wear: Bald spots, uneven wear, or tread depth below 4/32" means it's time to replace them.
- Underinflation: Chronically low tires wear early, hurt handling, and reduce fuel efficiency.
- Overinflation: Too much air causes a harsh ride, less traction, and a higher blowout risk.
- Bulges or blisters: Bulges or blisters on the sidewall are internal damage — replace immediately.
What to do
- Don't ignore it: Tire problems get worse fast, and they're a safety issue.
- Check them monthly: Look over your tires for wear, damage, and proper pressure at least once a month.
- Rotate regularly: Rotating every other oil change (or every 10,000 miles) keeps wear even.
- Get an alignment: If you notice uneven wear or pulling, schedule an alignment.
- Replace worn tires: Worn or damaged tires should be replaced with the correct size and spec for your vehicle.
