Understanding your vehicle's fuel system

Your fuel system is responsible for delivering fuel from the tank to the engine, where it's burned to power the vehicle. Understanding how it works and recognizing the signs of trouble helps you keep performance and efficiency where they should be.

How your fuel system works

• Fuel tank: Stores gasoline or diesel until the engine needs it.
• Fuel pump: Draws fuel from the tank and delivers it to the engine at the correct pressure.
• Fuel filter: Removes contaminants and debris before fuel reaches the engine.
• Fuel injectors: Spray a precise amount of fuel into the cylinders where it mixes with air and ignites.
• Fuel pressure regulator: Maintains constant pressure in the system for proper fuel delivery.

Signs of fuel system issues

• Stalling or hesitation: Engine stalling, hesitation, or misfires can point to a clogged fuel filter or failing pump.
• Decreased fuel efficiency: A drop in MPG can mean a clogged injector or a leak somewhere in the system.
• Difficulty starting: Hard starts — especially cold — often trace to a weak pump or restricted filter.
• Check engine light: A faulty oxygen sensor or injector can trigger the light.
