Understanding your diesel engine

Diesels are known for power, durability, and fuel efficiency — which is why they show up in everything from heavy trucks to passenger cars. Understanding how yours works and recognizing common issues helps keep it running strong.

How a diesel engine works

Unlike gasoline engines, which use spark plugs to ignite a mixture of air and fuel, diesel engines use compression ignition. When the piston compresses air in the cylinder, the air heats up enough for the diesel fuel to ignite on its own.

Common diesel engine issues

• Glow plug problems: Glow plugs preheat the combustion chamber for cold starts. Hard starting in cold weather often points to glow plug issues.
• Fuel system issues: Diesels rely on a precise fuel injection system — clogged filters, injector problems, and air in the fuel lines are all common.
• Turbocharger problems: Turbos increase power and efficiency. Watch for oil leaks, worn bearings, and compressor or turbine damage.
