Understanding your check engine light

The check engine light, also known as the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), is a signal from your car's engine computer that something is wrong. While it can be a source of anxiety for many drivers, it's your car's way of communicating with you.

What does the check engine light mean?

When the check engine light comes on, it means your car's onboard diagnostic system (OBD-II) has detected a problem with one of the systems or components it monitors. That can range from something as simple as a loose gas cap to a more serious issue like a failing oxygen sensor.

What to do when the check engine light comes on

• Don't panic: Seeing the light can be alarming, but it doesn't mean your car is about to break down. Still, address it promptly to prevent further damage.
• Check your gas cap: If you've just filled up, make sure the gas cap is on tight — a loose cap is a common trigger.
