Understanding your car battery

How your battery works

The battery stores electrical energy that the alternator produces while the engine is running. That stored energy powers the starter motor, ignition system, and other accessories when the engine isn't running.

Signs of a failing battery

Slow cranking: If the engine cranks slowly when starting, it usually points to a weak battery.
Warning light: A battery or charging warning light on the dash means something in the system needs attention.
